Conferences

Resident education includes formal noon conferences covering an 18 month curriculum, topical lectures on medicine, pediatric, and obstetrical services, as well as on the fly talks by faculty and upper level residents.

International Medicine Opportunities

The Self Regional Healthcare Family Medicine Residency Program is unique in its support of international medical missions. Stipends are available to residents interested in serving some of the most impoverished, yet beautiful places on Earth.

Recent trips have included Nicaragua, Ukraine, Panama, Romania, Guatemala, and Kenya. While most residents travel with Volunteers in Medical Missions, participation with other agencies is welcomed.

Specialty Tracks

The Self Regional Healthcare Family Medicine Residency is proud to offer three specialty tracks for residents interested in graduating with a concentration in a particular area of family medicine. The tracks presently available are Obstetrics and Gynecology; Sports Medicine; and Rural Medicine.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Track

Second-year residents wishing to enhance their experience in Obstetrics and Gynecology may enroll in this track.

In addition to their required rotations in OB/GYN, they receive an additional four months during the third year, an additional opportunity to take Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO), ultrasound training, and an additional one-week CME.

Residents may choose to do their additional rotations in primary obstetrics, advanced obstetrics including c-section, or colposcopy.

Sports Medicine Track

Sports Medicine in Action Second-year residents wishing to enhance their experience in Sport Medicine may enroll in this track.

In addition to their required rotation in Sports Medicine, they have a longitudinal training program that includes working with the team physician of Lander University (Faculty Physician Dr. Sealy), as well as being set up as a local high school team physician.

The track will make the resident proficient at sports physicals, casting and splinting, as well as improve their knowledge of sports related injuries and diseases.

Rural Medicine Track

First-year residents interested in pursuing a career in Rural Family Medicine may choose to enroll in this track. As second year residents their continuity clinic will be transferred to our rural clinic site in Ware Shoals, SC.

The resident will learn the importance of a family physician to the community of a small town by working with faculty family physicians dedicated to caring for this population.

In addition to the unique learning opportunity, residents in this track are given a private office, and laptop computer. They remain connected to the program via a fiber optic telemedicine network.
